Approaching Place (2015) is a photographic series created in response to John Szarkowski's book "The Photographer's Eye" (1966). Szarkowski highlights the importance of incorporating both technical and observational skills into the process of photography; most importantly he notes five technical points which, when applied to photographic processes can help support the creation of strong technical images.
The imagery produced is synonymous with formalism, concerned with aesthetics especially in terms of formal elements within the location. Alongside formalism, constructivist characteristics relating to geometry and form inspired the regimental and ordered use of vantage points within this series.
