Throughout this autobiographical, self-portrait art series, I have been interested in developing an understanding about what it means to be me. As an autistic female I reflect on my thoughts, feelings and relationship within this extraordinary world through photographing ambiguous pieces of land. Through the medium of photography, it has offered me with a voice in a world where I feel it is almost impossible to verbally communicate within or to be understood.
These images highlight my realities of what it really is like to live with an invisible condition, and how my engagement with this topic is relevant within today’s society. Being an “aspie” (a person with Asperger’s syndrome), this condition is often overlooked or misunderstood by “neurotypicals” (people not on the autism spectrum) due to its invisible nature. I ask you as an audience to please be mindful and considerate towards people with disabilities and illnesses whether they are visible or invisible.
